Unemployment: America Needs To Restore Positive Relationship With Dirt

The American jobless rate continues to climb. Democrats and Republicans continue to argue about what the best way to resolve this issue is. Lower taxes, more small business lending, and increasing construction jobs are currently cited. So far, none of the options offered by the Obama administration have worked.

Host of the Discovery channel show Dirty Jobs and narrator of Deadliest Catch offered his own perspective on what America’s jobless problem. Instead of worrying about political problems, Rowe suggested that America resume a much friendlier relationship with dirt and the other type of jobs that he regularly performs on his shows.

Rowe Is Right About Jobs – In a Way

Rowe is, whether he realizes it or not, rehashing one of the arguments frequently used in the illegal immigration debate. Everyone has heard that illegal aliens do jobs that Americans will not do. While this is not necessarily true, there are many Americans who would not consider taking the types of jobs regularly featured on Dirty Jobs.

If more Americans were to take these positions, Rowe argues, the jobless numbers for the nation would fall. Taking jobs where people get dirty would not however, solve the nation’s entire unemployment problem.

The Dysfunctional Relationship Of Americans With Dirt

Rowe believes that the shift in the United States economy came because Americans shifted their focus from manufacturing and agrarian to financial. As a result, more students are going to college to compete for a declining pool of jobs.

Even if Rowe is correct in his assumptions about the problem with America’s economy, his suggested switch will not solve the employment problem. Companies still go overseas because it is cheaper to hire workers in these countries. Much of the problem with illegal immigrants getting jobs comes from complicated and confiscatory IRS tax laws.
