Social Networking: Twitter Works Quickly To Fix WTF Worm
Twitter has faced a number of hacks in recent weeks. The first one directed people to a site that announced that their tweet had been hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army. The Iranian Cyber Army is not a real group, nor does it increase cyber terrorism. Twitter users faced a new hack that embedded itself into a person’s links when a person clicked on it.
Twitter’s most recent hack was dubbed the WTF worm for obvious reasons. People activated the worm by clicking on a link created by the social networking site’s URL shortener.
What The WTF Worm Did
Anyone who knows anything about Internet abbreviations knows what the letters stands for. When users clicked on a link, the worm would generate a tweet of an obscene nature on the account. When a user posted a tweet with an internal link, the virus would perpetuate itself. Other people who clicked on the link would find their Twitter accounts affected by the exploit.
Twitter worked to fix the problem quickly. A few hours after the exploit was found, an Employee announced on the official Twitter page that the problem had been fixed.
Cyber Exploits A Growing Problem
Hackers and virus programmers are finding new ways to affect people. As many people are using applications that do not require online access far less than they used to, the people who use these programs are forced to go online. Online viruses also have the advantage of affecting people regardless of the operating system they use. Modern browsers have the ability to run script programs, provided the right add-ons and Java interpreters are installed. Viruses and hacks that affect social networking programs will become increasingly common as the services become more popular. Scripts are also a used to download harmful code onto user’s computers.
